Only yesterday Gulf News of Dubai published my article Fighting hatred with dignified tolerance link: http://gulfnews.com/opinions/columnists/fighting-hatred-with-dignified-tolerance-1.1067121 in which I refer to Rimsha Masih.
Today I write to appeal to you, from Canada, to act with courage to protect this little girl against any potential harm, and possibly death, because of the way she disposed of pages of the Quran. I happen to be of Muslim background. But I am also a pediatric neurologist with American board certification. I know Down’s Syndrome quite well. Such children, previously called mongols, have a chromosomal abnormality which changes their appearance, but most importantly limits their IQ to between 30 and 60 on a scale of 100. That is moderately severe mental retardation. They only have rudimentary reading abilities. How can we possibly hold them responsible for understanding things that are way beyond their comprehension?
This is when leaders should address the nation on TV during prime time, to speak out and tell their people truths they may not want to hear. For God’s sake, show leadership: DO IT.
