“The average Canadian understands this is targeted at us (Muslims),” Arar said Friday. “With Bill C-51, you are basically saying, ‘Muslims are dangerous.’ This is the message that is being given.”Arar called on the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to scrap what he called an unnecessary law introduced by the Conservatives.
Many who support wearing the hijab believe it is a matter of choice. Yet in this context such an interpretation is simplistic, because the “choice” is made only within a very restrictive environment that promotes a certain type of orthodoxy interwoven with hellfire theology. I reject the notion that it is a freely made choice.
It is the third so-called “honour killing” case in a month in Pakistan, where attacks on women who go against conservative rules on love and marriage are common.
Simply said, the vast majority of Muslims are frustrated with their lives. They live in countries that are autocratic with little or no freedom, that are unjust and corrupt at the core, economically unsuccessful and where the individual’s relationship to the Almighty has been swept aside by rulers; religion is used as an instrument to control and rule, with rulers and their cronies living in unimaginable luxury while the average person cannot even make ends meet; the average Muslim has limited productive opportunities to make a decent living; and most frustrating of all, there is little hope of a better future.
“The chaste woman is a woman which protects her virginity. She walks close to the wall in the street looking down and not making eye contact with other men. She doesn’t raise her voice because men should not hear her voice. She doesn’t wear something attractive to seduce men. She doesn’t wear perfume because it is forbidden. If a man smells her perfume it is as if she committed adultery with him. A woman’s place is at home to take care of the family and make her husband happy.”
There’s little support for what most of us would consider female equality; one in three believes men should be able to take more than one wife; and more than half of Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal.Almost a quarter want the introduction of sharia law in this country; and a frightening 4 per cent — equivalent to 100,000 people — support violence, including suicide bombings, to ‘defend’ Islam.
