an alien rule over almost five million people, against their fervent wishes, [which] inevitably requires the repression of rights, the erosion of the rule of law, the abrogation of international commitments, the imposition of deeply discriminatory practices, the hollowing out of well-accepted standards of military behaviour, the subjugation of the humanity of the Other, the denial of trends that are plainly evident, the embrace of illiberal politics and – the focus of this report – the scorning of those civ
“Many of us tend to believe that the conflict can be managed forever and Israel no longer has a ‘Palestinian problem.’ However, this is pure deception. The continuing settlement expansion threatens to make a two-state solution to the conflict impossible. Israel is sliding into a situation where, short of apartheid, or expulsion of the Palestinians, a one-state solution with equal rights for all would become the only possible way out of the conflict. This is the South African model.”
A new Pew Research Center poll from January 4-9 of American views on foreign policy shows that Democratic Party sympathies for Israel are crashing, down ten points in the last 9 months, from 43 percent to 33 percent. That’s a 23 percent crash. If this was the stock market, Israel would be considered a tanking stock.Liberal Democrats now sympathize with Palestinians over Israelis by two-to-one, while Democrats overall are now virtually tied in sympathies for Israel or Palestine, 33 to 31 respectively.
Israeli journalist Gideon Levy a couple of days ago, where he said: “John Kerry, in his speech, he described a reality of what would be in a ‘one-state’ scenario, the Palestinians would live in enclaves, and that they would be without rights – he was actually describing the situation of today! Why are you saying when it becomes a ‘one-state’? Today! Why in the future? Today!”
spelled out the steps needed to discourage, to co-opt and to control the numbers of our university graduates. One specific recommendation dealt with ways to discourage our overseas graduates from returning. When his secret memo, submitted to Prime Minister Rabin, was leaked its author was elevated to the post of Director General of the Ministry of the Interior.
The European Union recognizes the right of its citizens to boycott Israel, its top foreign policy official has said. “The EU stands firm in protecting freedom of expression and freedom of association in line with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which is applicable on EU member states’ territory, including with regard to BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions] actions carried out on this territory,” Federica Mogherini told the European Parliament in answer to a written question in
The State Department has issued the strongest condemnation I can remember of a new Israeli settlement, as a contradiction of Israel’s own promises not to create settlements, as “deeply troubling” and “disheartening.” The statement from the State Department’s Mark Toner reads a bit more like an angry rant than a statement– with the comments that we just gave you a $38 billion aid package and this is how you thank us, that the announcement dishonors Shimon Peres’s legacy and that it show Israel’s determination to cement the “one-state reality of perpetual occupation.”
I saw the results: babies torn apart, shrieking refugees, smouldering bodies. It was a place called Qana and most of the 106 bodies – half of them children – now lie beneath the UN camp where they were torn to pieces by Israeli shells in 1996. I had been on a UN aid convoy just outside the south Lebanese village. Those shells swished right over our heads and into the refugees packed below us. It lasted for 17 minutes.Shimon Peres, standing for election as Israel’s prime minister – a post he inherited when his predecessor Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated – decided to increase his military credentials before polling day by assaulting Lebanon. The joint Nobel Peace Prize holder used as an excuse the firing of Katyusha rockets over the Lebanese border by the Hezbollah. In fact, their rockets were retaliation for the killing of a small Lebanese boy by a booby-trap bomb they suspected had been left by an Israeli patrol. It mattered not.
